Office Gifts and Being Happy

Friday, December 12th, 2008

We all know that if you get a gift you will probably be happy for the rest of the day. Whether it is your birthday or any other occasion any human being will be happy with a surprise. So should this great attitude and aspect be taken into the workplace? The simple answer is yes. If you give your employees an incentive such as a gift exchange they will be alot more productive. So what do you decide to get your colleagues every single month? Let’s take a look.

Firstly check what the occasion is, if it’s just the monthly routine present it will not be that hard to choose, but if it’s also combined with a colleague’s birthday or anniversary than you will have to be a bit more careful on what you choose to buy them. I dont think buying a keyring for their birthday would be a good idea. Make sure you find out wehen they were born.

Secondly we would look at familiarity, you are more likely to receive a larger present from someone that you get on with well in the work place. Let’s just put it this way, if you genuinely argue with someone in your work place they are more likely to get you a £1 gift, whereas your real friends would probably splash out considerably more. Remember to put considerable thought into your decision to buy a good present, maybe break it down into categories as follows:

Everyday Items are great for anyone, they always come into use, whether it’s for use in the bathroom or the kitchen, these are always well cherished gifts. Something that is a great gift and good to look at are Decorative Collectables. Finally remember to split the genders into two as you don’t want to be buying makeup for a boy and aftershave for a girl.

So if you own a business or are an office manager. You should look at introducing a buy a present exchange approach. This will not only give your self more motivation but it will cause a better environment in the work place. Unless of course they get you nothing!

Small Business Backup

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

One of the things I am fanatical about is having my files go missing. I have had hard disks fail in the past and since then I have been pretty good about backing up my data I  need and want to save. It helps that backing up has become easier with large hard drives and faster CDROM burners. Recently I have been searching for an offsite backup solution for one of my clients. We tried a “roll your own” method. It had a nasty habit of to just drop the connection before the backup was completed.

The next thing of course was to Google “cloud backup” and I checked out the different services that I discovered. I tried several and decided on OPENRSM CloudBackup. The facinating thing is that it has great features, works on MAC, Linux, and Windows, and has a scalable cost model.  The standard offering is 50GB of data storage for only $4.00/month.You will only pay extra fees if you go over 50GB of storage, no matter how many computers you have running OPENRSM CloudBackup. And for only cents per GB, that’s pretty sweet.

A lot of the online backup offerings were similar, the two things that make OPENRSM CloudBackup win out was support for multiple systems and network drive. In my office I have my Windows machine and a Linux box. Using OPENRSM CloudBackup it is also able to backup all of those files remotely as well. Now I have a local backup of my files in case of hard drive failure on my desktop, and a remote online backup in case there is some other kind of disaster here at my house. The initial session can take a while but after that it’s very quick.

If you run your own business you need an easy offsite backup, or even if you just want to safeguard your home system, give OPENRSM CloudBackup a try. I’ve been using it at home and the office for a while now and have been very happy with it. I hope I never have to use it to restore my files but it is good to know they’re safe in case something bad happens.

Full 1080p with an HDTV Satellite TV System

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

So, you just spent $2000 on that 50” 1080p plasma TV. The only problem is that you’re stuck with standard definition programming, making it feel as if you’ve just wasted $2000 on a 100 lb. Paperweight. You want to get the most out of your television set, so you can choose from one of several options. Firstly, you can go with cable which will cost you more than $100 a month for a few 1080i channels, or you can go with HDTV satellite TV systems at a fraction of the cost for more 1080p channels on all the time, giving you even better picture and sound.

Cable vs. Satellite

The debate between cable and satellite TV has been waging for the past decade with each side proclaiming its own superiority. However, the fact of the matter is that satellite TV wins hands down in most categories, including cost and content. An HDTV satellite TV system will provide more HD channels, and they will be in 1080p, as opposed to fuzzier 1080i. Essentially, 1080i (the i and p stand for interlaced and progressive, respectively) is only half as sharp as 1080p. While most people can’t see the individual lines updating twice as often as 1080i, they can still tell a significant difference between the two. While 1080i still looks great compared to SD programming, an HDTV satellite TV system will help you reach the full potential of your HDTV.

When choosing a satellite TV service in the United States, you have one of two options: Dish Network and DirecTV. These are the two largest providers, hands down, although there are many channels that transmit satellite signals for free. However, you won’t be getting the same content that you would from channels like AMC, Fox, and TNT. Also, you won’t get as many HD channels with free service. Instead, an HDTV satellite TV system will give you hundreds of channels, including sports, news, movies, and even music channels so that you can listen to thousands of different songs at once.

With innovative features like On Demand that let you watch movies at anytime and DVR which allows you to record your favorite shows and movies, an HDTV satellite TV system stands far ahead of the pack when it comes to offering great content at a cheap cost to the consumer. When you are getting more and paying less, you know you’ve gotten a great deal, so ditch the cable company and make the upgrade to an HDTV satellite TV system to get the most out of your television.
