Internet Attached Storage

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

“To Serve and Protect” is a phrase usually bringing thoughts of your local police department. But your photos, documents, and other files can be protect with a great option of safe media free storage. Internet Attached Storage can protect and serve your data to you anywhere, not just in your office or home.

Although files on your computer are safe from many threats, there is still a chance of fire or flood, or a computer–generated disaster, like hard disk failure, virus, worms or trojans damaging the files that hold your data. Digital data is expensive, difficult, and time consuming to recover and sometimes, impossible.  And if you have a laptop computer or netbook theft is a very real danger.

A cost effective and practical solution is Internet Attached Storage. Your files are transferred and stored with encryption that ensures your personal information remains personal. Password protection is always provided for your security.

There are some key considerations when using Internet Attached Storage. Some helpful guidelines include:

Continuous Backup

The more often you backup your files, the less likely you will lose information. File synchronization and network drive availability are features of the best Internet Attached Storage providers.

Don’t delete local files

Though Internet Attached Storage services are very secure it’s smart to keep important files on your computer where you can access them locally. Thus making it easy to mirror data to your Internet Attached Storage space.

Keep it organized

It’s senseless to store files if you can’t locate them. Internet Attached Storage has a file/folder structure that mirrors your own disk. It’s a good thing to do so.

Keep your password safe

Internet Attached Storage has personal passwords as a requirement of access. Keeping your password and username safe keeps your personal files from being compromised.

You don’t want to have to reconstruct banking data, bemoan the loss of family photos, tax returns, and important documents. And getting to this data from anywhere is a key element of being able to beat the competition. Types of data you should upload to Internet Attached Storage:

Images

Video

Audio Files

Financial Data

School Documents

Documentation

Email Archives

Internet Attached Storage has advanced beyond online backup to provide features like synchronization and network drive while protecting your data.

Which Internet Attached Storage product do we like?  We particularly like the features, cost, and reliability of OPENRSM CloudBackup.  It gives a great balance of features that go way beyond simple online backup that is particularly cost effective.  We endorse it wholeheartedly.

Affordable Online Banking Strategy

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Online banking is now a normal way of banking but not very long ago it was practically unheard of when it came to banking. Only a few short years ago in 1995, Saving Bank was the originator of the online banking option when they gave clients a choice of being able to look at their accounts and to do certain banking online.

Today practically everyone uses online banking to take care of their checking and savings accounts. They online bank to pay bills, keep track of their outgoing and incoming funds and even set up accounts that can be automatically debited for the amount of a bill on a recurring basis.

When online banking first became popular it was not nearly as sophisticated as it is today. With the speed of computers and the advance of technology, a purchase is immediately deducted from your checking account when you used a debit card. Unlike the days of writing checks and waiting for up to a week or longer for them to appear on your account, the money is immediately deducted and there is less chance of messing up your account balances.

Another great thing about online banking is the option of being able to access your account at any time. The banks close at a certain time usually between 4 and 5. If you are not able to get there you have to either spend your lunch time waiting at the bank or take time off to go. When you online bank, you can take care of your account at two o’clock in the morning if that is when you choose.

There are many banks to choose from when it comes to keeping track of your balances. TCF Online banking is one of them. For an easy way to keep track of your banking, TCF offers the way to check your balances, pay bills, transfer funds, and let you bank during hours that are convenient for you.

Just like all the other banks that have taken the initiative and gone with online banking this is one way to keep track of your money and have the convenience of being able to check your deposits, withdrawals, and transfers all from the privacy of your own home. TCF is just one of the many banks that offer online banking today.

Another one is Capital One. The basics are just about the same with online banking no matter what bank you decide to choose. Some may offer a few more incentives to get you to choose their bank, such as rounding up the change from using a debit card and putting it in your savings. However, they all basically offer the same services. It is just the convenience they offer that is so appealing.

The additional benefits of financing your car, your home or practically some other big buy you want to construct using Capital One or TCF is going to be about the same except the rates of interest may differ. Often this is a result of your credit score rather than what a finance company, bank, or other lending institution offers when it comes to interest rates.

A Review of the Xbox 360 Console

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

At present there are 3 main consoles for gaming out in the market from which to choose and they are the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. I have tested and written about both the Wii and the Playstation, so now it is time for an Xbox 360 console review.

Xbox 360 – A Complete Look

After I set it up I saw the Xbox 360 is a far cry from its predecessor. The original Xbox was big, black and boxy looking. The new unit is anything but. It is far smaller, although not as small as the Wii or Playstation, and white in color. Xbox 306 console gets a 4 points out of a maximum of 5 simply for the way it looks.

While appearance for some people is important, if you are a serious gamer then this is the least important thing. So let’s take a look into the next part of the Xbox 360 core console review and look at the titles that are available. This is not an Xbox 360 game review, but rather a look at the games you can get. The first thing that stands out for this Xbox 360 console review is that the Xbox is the only system that you can get Halo for. While it has been made available for the PC, the game play on the console is far superior. My favorite ever is the Halo series and this is a huge plus for the Xbox. Even though playing solo is enjoyable, multiplayer is where this game comes into it's own, but more on that later. The Xbox 360 console gets a 4 out of 5 from me for game titles.

The multi player options are the most important when you get a gaming system. The first Xbox hit its opposition out of the park, and meanwhilte the Wii and the Playstation are getting close, the Xbox 360 is in front. You can find games easily; get content, and almost all of the games released for the system offer multiplayer support. The score for its multi player is a 5 out of 5. I found it difficult to understand that this much of an improvement was possible.

The Xbox 360 in my mind is the best system if you are looking for online action. Without even looking at the graphics or doing an Xbox 360 VGA review it shines. It does not have the fun aspect of the Wii and most of the games are more adult in flavor. The market in fun and interactive games is owned by Wii hands down. For non online adult games the Playstation 3 might have a slight edge, but if it does it is very slight and the Xbox 360 can keep up with in almost every regard.

Well there you have it, hopefully this Xbox 360 core console review has helped you to make your decision.

Plans for retirement

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Although almost everyone has heard of the typical 401K retirement plan, fewer are aware of the government 403B retirement plan.  The 403B plan offers some lucrative potential, and should be invested in if the money can be at all spared.  Government workers such as teachers, school personnel, and librarians are frequently eligible for benefits under 403B.  Although eligibility varies, the plan is typically aimed at assisting those in the educational field.  Some nonprofits are also eligible for benefits under the 403B plan.

Business Making Money Online

The specifics of the plan can be complicated, but tax exemption acts as the main attraction of the investment.  All contributions made to a 403B are exempt from Federal taxes until retirement.  In addition to the savings made on the investment itself, the total amount of tax paid is also reduced, as your total pretax income will be lower.  This plan is available to the majority of people in any organization that qualifies under the IRS 501(c)(3) tax provision.

How To Make Easy Money Online

Employers enter into a contract with their employees to take out a set amount of their income each paycheck, setting it aside for their 403B retirement plan.  The contribution is not taxed, and the overall pretax income of the paycheck is also reduced.  Despite pretax income reductions, FICA contributions are not reduced, leaving your social security benefits at the same level they would be without 403B.  The contribution is entered into an investment account, where a vendor of the employee’s choosing will ensure a minimum rate of return.

With the universal availability clause, the majority of employees of a 501C eligible organization can set aside money.  Only those under 20 hours a week, or those already enrolled in a retirement plan can be denied participation.  The elective deferral limit for the 403B plan is $15,500 per year, or 100% of compensation.  The cap on total investment can be raised if the employer makes matching contributions, raising the cap as high as $46,000 or 100% of compensation (the lesser of the two).

The 403B retirement plan is a worthwhile savings that every eligible employee should consider.  The tax deferral status alone makes the 403B plan an lucrative option.  Should your employer offer matching benefits, that is all the more reason to start making contributions.  If you are worried about the safety of your investment, research fixed annuities.  Under a fixed annuity program, your investment is guaranteed to return a minimum.  Post retirement payments are also guaranteed by fixed annuity insurance programs.

Taking Care of Your Own… Computer Investment

Money is Tight

The news is depressing, your budget is shot, and your computers are younger than dirt but not by alot.  So, what are you gonna do when you need new systems? When the old become slow and your afraid that one of them will be gutted, along with your budget?

There is an answer and it costs little but pays huge dividends.Do some routine simple maintenance on your systems and keep your data backed up.It’s just that simple. And the benefits are great.

Think about it.If you keep your computers running longer instead of replacing them your saving money.Getting additional productive life out of the investment in your computers with a little maintenance increases your ROI.  The downtime for changeover of systems is reduced saving labor cost.  Just build a schedule of simple and quick tasks to keep your computers running longer and faster along with having the “insurance policy” of a quality offsite backup and your money ahead.

So here’s what you need to do:

Keep your antivirus up to date

Updating your virus scanner is the most important thing you can do for your computer. New viruses are  discovered daily. If you don’t update your antivirus program, you are taking a big risk.A virus scanner can’t prevent what it doesn’t know about. Daily updating is the only way to keep damaging viruses at bay. Most virus scanners will automatically update themselves with no intervention on your part. I highly recommend you use a virus program with this capability.

Update your Operating System

Along with keeping your virus scanner, you need to keep your Operating System (Windows, MAC, Linux) updated.  Windows update center for your Windows machines.  YUM, DEB, or APT for Linux. And the aptly named Software Update for the MAC.  You should set whichever system you have to update itself at least weekly. Folks who neglect this are leaving their computers vulnerable for hackers and other attacks.

Keep your Computer Running Right

If you have a car, you follow a maintenance schedule. You should do the same for your computer.   Once a week delete your Temporary Internet files.Check daily for antivirus updates.  Keep your computer safe from spills (soda is NOT good for keyboards). And don’t be afraid to get the vacume cleaner out and get all the dust off your computer and keyboard.  Dirt makes computers run hotter and that shortens the life of your computer.Just following this simple maintenance schedule will keep your computer productive longer.

Backup your Disk

Even with all the preventative maintenance in the world the inevitable will occur.Your computer will dump.  The fear of this is the number one reason people buy new computers even if their current system is perfectly good. But step back and think about this.  You can invest a small amount of money for remote online backup of your data and  large part of that fear can be elimenated.  The newer Internet Attached Storage services are much like antivirus software. They keep you backed up automatically while also being inexpensive and easy to use.

How much longer can you keep a computer running fast and efficiently with a little maintenance and prevention?  I have a system built in 1996 that I’m writing this article on right now.  Every day I look to make sure the virus scanner is up and running.  I make sure the icon for my remote online backup software is there.  I keep the keyboard clean, and clean the computer itself every week.  I’ve had to replace the hard drive and a power supply.  That’s it.  Now that’s what I call ROI.
